Lawrence, Kan. (KCTV) – A bald eagle and barn owl at Prairie Park Nature Center’s Bird of Prey exhibit were killed last week by raccoons that broke through an outdoor wooden fence and wire fence into a space between the cage area where the birds were housed.

According to a release from the City of Lawrence, staff added measures to reinforce the cage area and keep predators away.

The bald eagle was acquired by the Kansas State Nature Center in January 2003 as a one-year-old bird from the Kansas State University Veterinary Clinic. After extensive rehabilitation following a traumatic wing injury in a collision with a powerline, Kansa went on display in May 2003.

Serena, the barn owl, came to the nature center in 2011 from Walden’s Poodle in Tennessee.

Parks and recreation staff are working on a tribute to honor the birds for the service they provide to the Lawrence community.
